Step 1: Mark the Fence Location Once you have determined the property line and legal setback, mark out the location of the fence. Mark the locations of the corner post holes with spray paint. Mark the locations of the remaining line posts, keeping the distance between the posts evenly spaced at approximately 8’.
Step 2: Temporarily Set the Posts
Using a post hole digger, dig holes approximately 24" deep and 10" in diameter. Add a few inches of gravel to the bottom of the holes for drainage. Insert corner posts in holes. Ensure the posts are level and plumb. Temporarily brace posts with 2" x 4"s attached to post tops and ground.
Step 3: Run a String Line Run a string line from the top edges of the corner posts. Make sure the string is taut and level. This provides a guide to ensure that the posts are all installed at the same height. Install remaining line posts checking that each is plumb and at the same height as the corner posts.
Step 4: Assemble the Fence Panels Vinyl fence panels are comprised of a bottom rail, top rail and slats. Assemble them according to manufacturer’s instructions. Snap the ends of the top and bottom rails into the appropriate holes on the fence posts.
Step 5: Permanently Set the Posts
Mix fast-drying cement according to manufacturer's directions and pour in holes. Leave the 2" x 4" bracing in place overnight while the cement cures. Remove the bracing. Apply PVC cement to the inside of the post caps and then install atop posts.
Installing chain link fence
Step 1: Mark the Fence Location Before you start, have the local utility company mark all underground utility lines. Also, be sure to determine the property boundary and the local setback rules.
Once you have determined the property line and legal setback, mark out the location of the fence. Mark the locations of the corner post holes with spray paint. Mark the locations of the remaining line posts, keeping the distance between the posts evenly spaced and under 10 feet.
Step 2: Set the Posts
Using a post hole digger, cut holes 18” to 24” deep and at least 8” in diameter. Add gravel so that the top of each post sits 45" above the ground. Ensure the posts are level and plumb. Mix fast-drying cement according to manufacturer's directions and pour in holes. Let cure for 48 hours.
Step 3: Apply Fittings to the Posts
Attach two rail cups to each post and loosely tighten into place so there is a little play . Attach a dome cap to the top of each post. Place a loop cap on top of each line post. Slip three tension bands onto each post and loosely tighten . The bolt should face the outside of the fence.
Step 4: Stretch the Mesh
Start at the first post and stretch the mesh up against the post. Starting at the top, weave a tension bar (Image 1) through each "diamond" and through each tension band. The three tension bands should be spaced equally along the height of the post. Roll out the mesh along the outer perimeter of the fence line and temporarily attach wire ties every five or six feet to keep the mesh upright
Stop a few feet short of the fence post to stretch the mesh. This allows room to work the come-along. Run a tension bar down through each "diamond" to the ground. Attach the come-along hook to the tension band's bolt at the terminal post and the other hook to the tension bar. Ratchet until the mesh is taut. Once a section has been stretched, cut off the excess length using wire cutters. Repeat until done.
Once all of the mesh has been stretched, go back and place wire ties every five or six feet along the top rail and at least three ties per post.
Step 5: Install the Gate Gate kits come in any number of widths. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to construct and install. Attach the necessary hardware loosely at first making sure all the latches and hinges line up. When everything is in place, go back and tighten all of the hardware.
